Barbecue is a classic southern food and is something people enjoy all across North Carolina. One of the newest barbecue restaurants in Greenville is Uncle Yammy's, a restaurant that offers everything from ribs, barbecue sandwiches, salads with chicken to fried chicken options.
When I walked into Uncle Yammy's, which is located at 610-A Red Banks Rd., the restaurant was almost full, with only a couple of booths in the corner available. The room was active with the buzz of customer voices and a laidback vibe filling the room.
Customers chowed down on hushpuppies, a food item that is brought to every table at the beginning of a meal, ribs, fries and a variety of good food offered on the menu.
The Uncle Yammy's menu not only has the classic barbecue options, but also provides options for those customers who might be in the mood for something other than barbecue.
The prices for sandwiches, such as barbecue, chicken or a hamburger, range from about $3 to $5. The salads, which include items such as a fried or grilled chicken salad, range from about $5 to $7. Wings are about $5 for a small order and $14 for a large order. Also, the ribs, which are a staple barbecue item, are $12 for a half rack and $18 for a rack. Chicken items are about $6 to $7, and finally, combo plates are $9 for a meal with two meat options and $14 for a meal with three meat options.
The atmosphere of the restaurant is inviting and comfortable to people of all different walks of life. There is an ECU flag displayed on the wall to show some Pirate Pride and many of the people I saw appeared to be students or associated with ECU.
One of the owners, Steve Johnson, whose nickname is "Uncle Yammy," said that the restaurant is supposed to be very welcoming to ECU students.
"My entire family are ECU graduates," he said. "We bleed purple and gold."
Johnson also noted that the restaurant supports ECU by providing catering for different events.
So Uncle Yammy's may be a place for ECU students, faculty or people in the Greenville community who want to find a place that offers catering or just a new barbecue place to sit back and relax while watching a sports game on TV or having fun with family and friends. It is definitely a family-friendly place that offers options for the whole family, even those who may be picky eaters, such as younger children, but adults can find many options as well.
Uncle Yammy's has been open since Feb. 17, 2009 and has been growing in popularity ever since. It is open every day from 11 a.m. to 9:30 p.m. so it would be an easy place to go grab a quick lunch or dinner.
