It goes by so fast

Well, this is my last column for The East Carolinian. No, I'm not getting fired. In a few weeks I will enter into that grand exercise for which we all aspire -- graduation. I cannot believe that it is already time to graduate. Senioritis set in a while back, and I am beyond ready to graduate. Only those of us who are seniors truly know that feeling. The feeling of anticipation and the pure dread of performing the final little tasks to finish up our last classes. As I approach these last few weeks, I have some parting thoughts.

First of all, this is a first-rate institution. Do not let anyone tell you otherwise. There are alumni of other institutions (I think we can all think of a couple) that may look down upon an ECU education. Those of us who have gone here should always know better. I feel that the classes I have taken here have prepared me for my future career. They have prepared me in the best way college courses can prepare anyone. The professors I have had have been top-notch as well. ECU has a nationally-respected medical school as well as many other programs. Be proud of where you went to school. I admit, my first choice in high school was not ECU, but I am very proud that on May 8 I'll be receiving my degree from this university.

Secondly, don't waste your time here. I hate to sound like somebody's parents, but four years go by so fast. It seems like only last week I was a freshman. If you do not pay attention, your college experience will fly by before you even realize it. Even if you are a commuter student like I was, you can still have a great college experience if you look for all of the opportunities. Go to football games. Go to other sporting events, for that matter. Support the Pirates when you can. Be active on campus. There are so many opportunities to meet other students and participate in activities that are meaningful. Look to Greek organizations, political groups, academic and professional societies, religious groups -- whatever it is that interests you.

College is a time where you really grow into the kind of adult you are going to be. Keep that in mind. It is tempting to waste these years partying and socializing. While that's not all bad, take some time while you're here to grow intellectually. When you get a chance to pick a class, take a "hard" one every now and then. Pick up some books to read on your own. One of the best things looking back about my college experience was being exposed to new ideas and different kinds of people from all types of backgrounds. All of this will help you grow as a person.

Also, get involved with a campus ministry. It is easy when you get to college to forget your religious roots. Find one on campus where you feel like you can fit in and give it a shot. Our spirituality, like our intellect, is also something that should be cultivated in this transformative experience we call college.

Well, I guess that's about it. College has been a great experience. Part of me will miss it. Mostly though, I am ready for what lies ahead. It's about time to get that cap and gown on -- go Pirates!
