This weekend's regional at Clark-LeClair Stadium was an accumulation of years of hard work, campaigning, coaching and not to forget the dedication of a amount tremendous baseball players past and present.
Finally after all the years of waiting, the Pirates got their shot to host regional in Greenville and it finally paid off.
The atmosphere this weekend was second to none in the nation. The crowd was hanging on every pitch and the noise raised from the grandstands and the jungle gave me chills multiple times throughout the weekend.
Even South Carolina coach Ray Tanner was impressed.
"I love the park," Tanner said. "I think it's a great atmosphere. It was first class. It made you feel like you were in a big league ballpark."
"It sends a message about commitment to baseball and college baseball. I like the way the park plays. They do a great job all the way around," Tanner added.
While there were many memorable ECU moments from the biggest event ever at Clark-LeClair Stadium, the following are my top five.
Top 5 ECU Regional Moments
5. Roller's Big Sunday
Designated hitter Kyle Roller went off on Sunday to lead ECU in two must win ballgames. Roller blasted two home runs in the fifth inning against Binghamton and got the game rolling in the Pirates favor against South Carolina with a three run bomb in the first inning.
4. Trent Whitehead's shot began ECU's campaign
Sophomore centerfielder Trent Whitehead got the regional started off right for the Pirates taking the first pitch over the right field fence for a home run against Binghamton. The home run got the crowd into the early game and energized the fans for the rest of the Regional.
3. Devin Harris steals one
In the fifth inning against South Carolina on Sunday afternoon, right fielder Devin Harris robbed the Gamecocks' Adam Matthews of a crucial home run. Harris leaped straight up with his back against the wall and brought the ball back into the ballpark. The catch would not be the last crucial play for the Ashbrook High School product.
2. Coach LeClair's children throwing out the first pitch
J.D. and Audrey LeClair threw out the ceremonial first pitch of the tournament for the Pirates. This was a touching moment for the Pirate nation as well as J.D. and Audrey because their dad put so much work in during his tenure to make this past weekend possible.
1. Harris' late inning heroics:
Devin Harris crushed the second pitch of his at bat in the bottom of the ninth inning of the Regional Championship to tie the ball game against South Carolina to tie the game at 9-9.
The stadium went nuts but the game remained up in the air until Harris stepped up to the plate in the tenth inning with runners at second and third. Harris then hit a shot up the middle scoring that scored Kyle Roller and sealed a ticket for the Pirates to the Super Regional round where they will take on North Carolina next weekend for a chance to go to Omaha.
