The ECU men's soccer club season continued Sunday with ECU hosting Duke and N.C. State. ECU, who defeated NCSU 3-0 in their last meeting, had not played Duke this season. The first game of the day featured ECU against Duke. Both teams came out hard and shared possession early in the game. Halfway through the first half, ECU started controlling play, working the ball through the Duke defense. The first goal came on a ball played up by Mike Rowe which deflected off a Duke defender right into the path of DJ Jarmon Jr. who beat the keeper at the near post and gave ECU a 1-0 lead at halftime.
"We were firing on all cylinders," said Matt Clair.
In the second half ECU scored again on a ball played poorly out on a corner kick. Travis Robinson ripped it through traffic deflecting into the goal. Later Jarmon would get his second goal of the game on 25-yard rip off the post from a ball played by Bill Hancock.
"We played well as a team," said Kevin Smith. "We didn't have any let downs."
The final goal of the game came when goalkeeper Matt Hayek threw the ball up to Jarmon who was fouled in the box. Justin Lucas skillfully finished the resulting penalty kick giving ECU the 4-0 win.
ECU's second game of the day was against rival N.C. State. ECU came out strong controlling play and making runs at the NCSU defense. Throughout the game ECU's defense led by Matt Clair, Kevin Smith, Danny Gallagher and Doug Powell kept a solid watch over the ECU end of the field and continuously fed the offense.
ECU got on the board first when Jon Deutsch stole the ball and flicked it on to Travis Robinson who beat the keeper putting ECU up 1-0. Joe Leonard had a few great rips on goal but in the end none reached the net. Late in the game NCSU got a couple of breaks and the final score was 1-2 NCSU.
"This season we've played a lot of games and we're peaking at the right time," said DJ Jarmon Jr.
"We're going to be very competitive when we travel."
