New technologies may be fueling social isolation

A recent study conducted by the Pew Research Center, an American think-tank based out of Washington, D.C., set out to answer the question: Are Americans more socially isolated?

The answer may surprise you.

The conclusions of the Pew study ran contrary in a number of ways to a widely publicized piece published by Duke University in 2006, which stated Americans were more inclined to be socially isolated and have increasingly moved away from face-to-face interaction since the mid 1980s.

Twitter growth may be limited

Candidates running for city council thought they were in for a hard fight this election season, but voter outreach efforts by local businesses failed to counteract a landslide at the polls for many candidates relying on the youth vote.

The Greenville City Council has been dealing with a downtown crime issue for years now, but the council's handling of the issue never seemed to garner much controversy until late this summer.

Students feel current financial aid is not enough

As students apply for financial aid to take a step closer to their dream career, many options are provided to aid in paying for tuition. However, many students feel that they are not getting the aid that they really need.

Kyndall Peele, a communication major who has to pay out-of-state tuition, feels that she is not receiving the help that she needs.

Humane Society preparing for holiday events

Volunteers from the Humane Society of Eastern Carolina will be gift-wrapping presents for patrons of the Greenville Mall from Nov. 30 to Dec. 2 for donations. The annual fundraiser raises money to support Humane Society operations through the winter.

Katie Benson, assistant facility manager, said the event is usually the most successful fundraiser held by the Humane Society.

ECU winning streak over Campbell snapped

Club hockey splits pair of conference matches

The ECU club ice hockey team split a Blue Ridge Hockey Conference home stand this weekend in beating UNC Wilmington 8-4 and falling to No. 3 Loyola College 7-4.

The No. 11 ranked Pirates (5-4-1, 4-2 BRHC) in division three, according to the American Collegiate Hockey Association, ended its home weekend on a good note, caging the UNCW Seahawks with an 8-4 victory Saturday afternoon.

Health care bill doomed to failure

As some of us near our last year of college, we can't help but wonder, "What is going to happen to my health insurance?" Although some, including myself, are on our parents' plan that is good until the age of 25, what about those who are forced to get their own plan as soon as they are no longer a full-time student?

Originally from New York, my family and I have had to make the 10-hour drive up there twice a year since we moved to North Carolina. It is a fairly difficult drive and because it is such a long drive; you cannot plan around rush hour because you will inevitably be stuck in some sort of traffic near a metropolitan area.

In 2008, approximately 2,600 dogs and cats were euthanized at the Pitt County Animal Shelter alone. Spay Today is a low-cost spay and neuter clinic for cats and dogs located in Greenville that hopes to significantly lower that number in future years.

Spay Today is hosting an event this Friday, entitled "Calling All Cats," which is exactly what they hope to do.

As I walked into Manhattan Pizzeria, located in the Lynncroft shopping center where Ledo's Pizza was previously, I could smell the strong aroma of herbs, cheeses and meat marinating in flavorful seasonings.
