“Reflections” by MisterWives
Coming in at number five this week with a funky beat and futuristic vocals is “Reflections” by MisterWives.
The first time I heard this song was in a remix by one of my favorite DJs, Kygo. With MisterWives lead singer Mandy Lee’s chilling voice and DJ Kygo’s beats, this song will have you feeling like you’re in heaven.
Once I found MisterWives I knew I’d love them considering their debut album “Our Own House” had a Tyrannosaurus rex, squirrel, hummingbird, octopus and elephant all coming out of a tiny house on the cover. I don’t think it gets more random than that.
“Forever Young” by Lil Yachty and Diplo
At number four comes “Forever Young” by rap artist Lil Yachty and one of my favorite DJs, Diplo. Since Diplo never seems to disappoint and Lil Yachty comes with his own talents, the two together were a combo meant for success.
This banger is hard not to jam to and I’m honestly confused as to why it isn’t a radio hit yet. This may just be my unpopular opinion though, since many people seem to think Lil Yachty is overrated. However, I think highly of him considering he’s only 19-years-old, has many hits and embraces his unique sense of style. Watching his music videos and seeing this style he shows off makes him refreshing and different from most rap artists.
“Broken by Lovely.The.Band”
One day I decided to see if there was a band named Broken Love, I figured there had to be some sort of band with this name. I didn’t find one, but I did find the number three song on this week’s list.
“Broken” by Lovely.The.Band only has a little over 10,000 views on YouTube, but this underrated tune brings an electronic-indie anthem to the table that offers easy-to-listen-to beats and lyrics that are absolutely genius.
“I like that you’re broken/ Broken like me/ Maybe that makes me a fool,” Lead vocalist Mitchy Collins sings in the band’s debut single.
With a hook like that, this song has easily become my favorite (and probably my best) random find.
“Lions” by Skip Marley
Taking its place at number two is “Lions” by Skip Marley.
Skip is the grandson of the one and only Bob Marley, and with that being said, if you don’t listen to any of these songs at least listen to this one. “Lions,” and Skip Marley in general, is exactly what this generation needs right now. Even with his twist on reggae, he literally sounds like a modern version of his grandfather. For a kid who just turned 21-years-old, I'm highly impressed by how wise and smooth he is.
“We are the lions, we are the chosen/ We gonna shine out the dark/ We are the movement, this generation/ You better know who we are, who we are,” Marley sings as he imparts his wisdom on all those who will listen.
Marley was recently featured in Katy Perry’s song “Chained to the Rhythm,” and even in that song his lyrics seek to encourage and inspire. Let’s just say, I hope we’ll be seeing more of Skip Marley in the future.
“Line of Sight” by ODESZA featuring WYNNE and Mansionair
“Line of Sight” by ODESZA has earned the number one spot on this week’s list. The production duo, which has been together for five years, has a unique EDM (electronic dance music) sound that really shows in this song.
ODESZA differs from most producers and DJs, considering they don't really mix common songs when performing live. Instead, the duo sticks to playing their own songs for the most part. I think it's cool that they aren't trying to get people's attention by playing ‘popular’ songs.
While most of their songs normally don't have many lyrics, this particular song offers a slightly different vibe compared to what fans are use to, with lead vocals from WYNNE and additional vocals from artist Mansionair. What comes to life is an enchanting summer hit.
