“Violet” by Hippo Campus
The number five song this week not only has the coolest music video ever, but also has a modern, yet old-school sound reminding me of 70s band, The Clash. The music video for “Violet” uses pastel colored backgrounds and really encompasses the band’s eclectic style.
Hippo Campus is a Minnesota-bred band that’s been around since 2013. The talented band members have some killer vocals and an awesome indie-rock vibe that sounds even better live. With that being said, hopefully within the next couple years, Hippo Campus will get more recognition.
“Mark My Words” by Justin Bieber
For all of you who don’t know me, just know Justin Bieber has been my favorite person for about six years now. So yes, before you assume, I was one of those girls in middle/high school.
“Mark My Words” is the opening track on Bieber’s latest album, “Purpose,” and is the number four song for this week’s discovery. It’s only a two-minute song and stands as the perfect opening to his album. “Mark My Words” is the most passionate song Justin Bieber has released to date and the beat of the song is made up of his beautiful vocals and single piano keys every couple seconds. It shows a rare side to Bieber and is extremely underrated, making it well worth the listen.
“Gold” by Gabriel Rios (Thomas Jack Radio Edit)
The number three song this week is “Gold” and no, that wasn’t a joke about how good it is, that’s actually the name of the song. This song has a violin chorus that really gets to me. I’m a sucker for anyone who adds the violin to their song. The original of this song has a basic acoustic vibe, however the Thomas Jack radio edit really transforms this song. The Australian DJ’s addition of the violin behind the vocals takes “Gold” to another level and the guitar in the song also gives it beach-at-dusk feeling, creating a piece that is both romantic and poetic.
"The Ballad of Me And My Brain" by The 1975
“The Ballad of Me And My Brain” is the number two song and my favorite song by The 1975. With only 34,000 views on Youtube, this is one of The 1975’s most underrated songs. Lead singer Matty Healy shows off more of his raspy vocals, and even sounds a little angry in this song. The 1975 is a pretty popular band, their pop-alternative sound really gets people’s attention. Their most popular radio hit, “Chocolate,” was released in 2013. Since then, they’ve been touring and released another album, “I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it”, which won countless awards and has built an amazing fan base.
“Plot Twist” by Sigrid
The number one song of the week comes from Norwegian singer/songwriter, Sigrid. Sigrid is definitely the artist to watch out for, as she provides listeners with a unique, very natural and neat style. Her latest song “Plot Twist” has the same hype tone as her most popular single “Don’t Kill My Vibe,” which came out early March.
In her video for “Plot Twist” she has no makeup, jeans and a pull over on. Her lyrics and laid-back style definitely show us what she’s about in this video. Sigrid is all around an incredibly talented girl that we will be seeing a lot more of in the near future.
