Column: I'm a Tar Heel born… I'll be a Pirate dead

Abstract:
When I learned that ECU and North Carolina were both hosting a regional this year in baseball, I instantly called my father to alert him that there was the possibility of the two butting heads for the chance to go to the College World Series.

"Dad, ECU is hosting a regional in baseball this year," I said....

First of all, it's "Mack" Brown. Second, I was also raised as a Carolina fan. Please don't tell me I'm not a "true" Pirate because I continue to root for the Heels. I didn't apply to UNC, because I didn't think I could get in--but I wouldn't trade my four years at ECU for anything. I will never be a Tar Heel. I will always be a Pirate. But that doesn't mean I can't be a fan of both school's athletic programs.

And NEWS FLASH: It's just sports. It is only a GAME.

Do you ever get chafed straddling the fence so much?

Learn the history of ECU and the many attempts of UNC trying to minimize its existence. When ECTTS (East Carolina Teacher Training School) was thought of, UNC and the Consolidated Universities (precursor to the UNC System) didn't want the school to exist. When East Carolina College wanted to become an university, UNC said no. When ECU wanted a Medical School, UNC said no. UNC won a lot of fights, but lost a few ones as well. If you love ECU and Eastern North Carolina, there is no way you can tolerate UNC.

Sorry Bob but Jared is right, you might not want Jared to tell you, your not a "true" Pirate fan but I dang sure will. If you truly understand everything between ECU and UNC @ chapel hill then you would understand that is it not just sports, but way more than that. Who knows maybe one day you will realize what we are talking about and actually pick a side but answer me this. Do you think that someone could be a unc fan and a duke fan or maybe a Boston Redsox fan and a Yankees fan? I think you know the answer and it is no different from this situation. But go ahead and continue to sit on the fence and pull for ECU in football and then when basketball season rolls around put your faded blue back on and claim to be a tarhole.

I can count the number of ECU basketball games I missed in four years on two hands. If you can say the same, I congratulate you. If not, don't question my allegiance to ECU. I'm not just a Carolina basketball fan. I grew up (near the Triangle) following everything Carolina, whether it was football or soccer or something else. I do the same now for ECU. When the two baseball teams recently met, I rooted for the Pirates 100 percent.

And I'm not really sure how you can compare this to Yankees-Red Sox. Are you implying that ECU-UNC is an historically intense rivalry (in sports)? Let's say this was ECU-N.C. State- a more intense rivalry. Don't you think there are some Pirates that grew up State fans and still have a little love for their roots?

I'm aware of the history between ECU and UNC. Are we to hold that against every UNC alum? Are you holding Carolina athletes accountable for the actions of university officials? Are you holding it against the current students who are there to get an education?

Never understood why people love a school that rejects you, or is too expensive to attend. Read the history and educate yourself, then you'll see why TRUE PIRATES never side/cheer for such an elitist group of snobs. ECU stands for something called "Service", while UNC-ch represents the degradation of democracy and freedom.

This was linked to the Carolina board, and I must say, EZU fans suck. Go Heels! I never have seen anyone on our campus pull for EZU in anything. EZU fans are bandwagon fans, good to knock you out of the super regional and continue to dominate you in everything from the athletic field to the classroom.

Carolina Blue I suspect you never attended a class in Chapel Hill and are one of the legion of Walmarters wearing unc sportswear. You wouldn't have a clue as to what is worn by the students in Chapel Hill if you didn't work the counter at McDonalds on Franklin St. No matter get lost, your opinion does not belong on an ECU website.

You know why ECU fans hate UNC? The 50 plus years of history of UNC trying to prevent ECU from getting a medical school, preventing ECU from becoming a University, trying to stop ECU from getting a dental program, and continuing to do everything in their power to try and hurt the eastern part of the state. You're scared of what happens when we get to the next level, and then you arrogantly talk down to us as if we didn't have such gross disadvantages. You wine and cheese crowders have tried to keep the East down for years and we've all lived it and grown tired of it.

You talk about your admission standards and your academics, but you lost sight of what a University should be about. North Carolina used to call itself the University of the people, but it has become the University of the elitist. East Carolina is the real University of the people, as it was founded and as it has remained since. While you're turning people away because they don't fit your pristine standards, we're accepting the unloved and the unwanted; the people whom want the chance to earn an education; people who are the first in their family to graduate from college. It is because of this mission that loyalty runs deep within the Pirate Nation. We're only a few thousand students away from completely eclipsing UNC in students.

Some schools like UNC sit around trying to live off of tradition. Here at East Carolina, we're building it, one touchdown, one diploma at a time.

You can gloat now about baseball, but come football season, there's a purple storm brewing, and we aim to dominate.

I have never heard so much crying from a fan base on non sports topics. You are talking sports here not how to get a medical and dental school. Go bitch to your state rep. You guys are just flat out dumb. If you can not get into Carolina you can always go to ezu.....

If a student or alumnus of ECU knows the history of unc-ch over more than 100 years of unc-ch loyalists doing everything it their power to deny a Teachers College in ENC and then trying to deny every effort to improve ECTC, ECC and ECU still is a unc-ch fan that is akin to treason in most ECU loyalist's way of thinking. It would be like pulling for the Taliban and/or al-Qaeda in the war in Afghanistan while claiming that you are a patriotic American.

All walheels should be forced to hang out with real graduates/students from that place, for an entire day. That would cure 'em.

Just pull for the degree on the wall baby. I live a nice life and own two homes - getting paid, all thanks to ECU. Atleast unc grads have their prestigious degree to look at - I prefer my lil ol' EZU degree, and assets....... LOL.

Yeah, I use to be a true Tarheel fan. But, after working for and going to ECU I grew up. Now when I see UNC my stomach turns a bit. I know some grad's from there and finally understand the difference in attitudes. If it was up to UNC we wouldn't even have a medical school and nursing school. Remember that next time you decide to be on the band wagon for Heels basketball. I support ECU as they in turn support my area, not Carolina. Pirate for life.

First of all, the university that we are speaking of is not "the University of North Carolina," it's the University of North Carolina AT Chapel Hill. The University of North Carolina is a public university system comprised of 17 schools, including East Carolina University.
Second of all, I loathe all that is tarhole; the "legend," the graduates, the air of arrogance, and that sickening shade of blue. (The reason the sky is carolina blue is because of pollution). As for the "EZU" comments...I have at least one friend that graduated from or are currently attending Chapel Hill, NCSU, Wake, and Duke and our experiences tend to be about the same. I know a chapel hill PhD candidate that complains that their students whine about having do work that is no different from what was required at ECU. Chapel hill graduates, for some reason, believe their own legend in that they have had a tougher time in school than anyone else and that their curriculum is more difficult than any other school's. It is this pompous attitude that I despise. I CHOSE ECU because of the spirited student body, and because they offered an undergraduate degree that was actually far superior than that of chapel hill's. All universities are party schools if that is what you intend to do, every school offers great educational opportunities if that is what you seek...I will take my two ECU degrees over a chapel hill degree any day!

I didn't settle for ECU. My dad wanted me to apply to UNC-CH. I told him no. I don't regret my decision one bit. People need to quit using ECU as a Plan B.

If you haven't read this book, you should:
East Carolina University: The Formative Years, 1907-1982
by Mary Jo Jackson Bratton
ISBN-10: 9996942244
ISBN-13: 978-9996942242

The author earned her M.A. and Ph.D. from UNC-CH, but she provides documentation for every attempt by UNC-CH to deny funding to and inhibit the growth of ECU.

I agree, Chris. The book you reference above will turn anyone's blood into a shade of deep, deep purple.

Every freshman at ECU should be required to read it the same way all freshman at UNC-CH are required to read the Koran.

ECU grad here, I had a conference at UNC @ Chapel Hill to attend for a week, I stayed with an old college roommate and his wife. Everyday when I got back to his house I would run up the stairs screaming "I have Carolina on me"! I would shower to clean like I was a victim of a horrible crime. Anyways, yeah get off the fence you will feel so much better TRUST ME. I used to like carolina basketball as a kid, but when my sister went to ECU before me, thats when my love for ECU began. I continued in her footsteps leaving all alliances behind. PURPLE AND GOLD BABY! embrace it, live it, love it....it is who we are!

The fact that some of you "settled" on ECU because you could not or did not think you could get in to UNC-CH bothers me. I want ECU students to come here because they want to come here, not because they could not or did not think they could get in to UNC-CH.
