ECU investigates inappropriate police behavior at Saturday's game

Abstract:
University officials are investigating the use of unnecessary force by police officers at Saturday's ECU-West Virginia University game.

ECU Police Chief Scott Shelton confirmed that some fans that rushed the field were tackled or pushed to the ground by police officers, and punches were thrown by a sheriff's deputy whose name was not disclosed....

Without being on the field, it is impossible to know exactly what happened and whether the force was necessary. However, unless someone is fighting back or has a weapon, which didn't appear to be the case...punching them repeatedly isn't necessary.

I'm sure that the ECU PD and the ECU Dept of Athletics have worked together to discuss their policies and procedures for these kinds of situations. If students are going to rush the field and not be allowed to tear down the goalposts, then they could be allowed to rush the field and then if cops see any taunting WVU players excessively or other inappropriate behavior.....arrest them, etc. Having said that, the biggest concern is obviously the safety of both teams.....

I saw some of the police brutality from up close. Also, I saw video on the local news of a cop taking a running start to punch a student behind the fence. And I just saw a different video on ESPN of a 3 cops holding a student down & one cop punched the kid several times.
Excessive Force by police is really sickening. I hope those cops lose their job and found guilty of assault. Of course, that probably won't happen, but the fact that its on ESPN is encouraging.

I was in section 17 and watched three officers tackle a young man that was running down the stairs in front of my section. THREE cops, one young man. There were many other students running down the steps after this one young man. I sincerely hope this young man was not injured or his college career placed in jeopardy due to the excessive force of law enforcement. This really put a damper on the win for the ECU football team. My husband was so upset on the drive home, it was all he could talk about. from a 1990 ECU graduate.

The young man tackled in front of Section 17 had been told numerous times to not go a certain way (through the bushes) onto the field. The officers were letting him go on the field, just not the way he wanted to go. When he went his way anyway hit struck an officer. The officer then attepted to stop him and was joined by other officers who saw what happened.

If this upset you sorry.

I saw what some of these SS-wannabes were doing, and they should plain and simple be taken out and SHOT.

These are worthless PIGS, not police officers.

NC, the only state in the US where a cop can get a pass for beating the shit out of a student. Next cop that stops me better expect to get shot at. Fuck pigs.

John, actually in Los Angeles, CA, the situation is much worse with bad cops.

But I agree with you 100%. Cops that overreact (and that's almost all of them) should be punished.
