Shooting at The Other Place leaves two dead

Abstract:
At around 2 a.m. this morning, two young men were brutally wounded in front of the Other Place Club (The OP) on 5th Street.

A fight broke out shortly before the shooting and, according to several eyewitnesses, the killers may have been involved in the dispute, but it is still unknown....

UGH!

IT IS BAD JOURNALISM TO USE ANONYMOUS SOURCES!!!!!! PLEASE TEC, CRACK DOWN ON IT. I am almost EMBARASSED to say that I worked for this paper!!!

Aside from that, I am saddened to hear about these crimes. Greenville is getting worse and worse.

Wow. When will Greenville wake up? This isn't a college town anymore. This is a town riddled with poverty and crime. I left ECU to find a safer place to live.

I trust the campus - well lit and the police are always on watch. But GPD needs to understand that "downtown" is not safe at night and Pirates need to take back the streets.

I will not visit Greenville, especially at night, until the crime is dealt with. Someone in the Daily Reflector said that Greenville has violent crime like any other city - that is not the case. Greenville is not a urban city - it is a University surrounded by supporting businesses and those who wish to prey upon others. This college TOWN, not CITY, needs to push more to make the city safer.

I love ECU, but I hate what Greenville has become.

Take a basic reporting class! Never use today, this morning, etc. Use the date. Saying that it happened "this morning" is incorrect. It happened Tuesday morning, the paper went out Wednesday. Use an active voice when reporting. This is horrible. Great job editor.

So .. I never post up here, but this article is just TERRIBLE. I can't believe the editor let it run as is .. there are grammatical and style errors throughout and parts of the piece are not even relevant to the subject at hand. Case in point: "To add to the despair within the celebrity realm, students and families in Greenville grieve for their own losses on a more personal level." What the heck? Why even put this in the article? PLEASE get someone who is competent to write or write it yourself. That's what the editor in chief does-fills in the gaps. PLEASE do that-it's your job.

Hate to burst your bubble but different people are posting. I posted once and never again. People are just annoyed and angry at the writing being produced by TEC. I'm a comm major and it is sad to see this as a representation of ECU.

Nope, that's not the same person. I was the first UGH. And no, I did not get fired from TEC. I quit, just like most of the staff has in the past few years.

Simple grammatical errors are a disgrace to this paper. I can't believe that it still occurs on a regular basis. This article is simply "not good" and does no justice to the topic discussed. This could have been a great way for the writer to explore the grief many in the Pirate Nation are experiencing (since many students knew the victims), yet it's completely ruined by anonymous sources (which again, is horrible journalism) and describing the scene. This is a news story that should serve the purpose of researching and informing, not solely describing what the road looks like.

I'm sure many of the writers, just as I was, are journalism majors. Well, I can assure you that no editor is going to take your articles seriously if you can't correctly understand the rules of AP Style. Articles are sloppy, poorly-written and most importantly, poorly edited. (this goes for many of TEC's articles). TEC has a huge opportunity to step it up and make things change, yet they have restorted to lazy reporting that has destroyed the paper in the past few years. Can I point out that one of those sources, Ahmet, is (or was) a writer just a few weeks ago. Has it gotten so bad that conducting research is just finding who is around the TEC office and getting a quote from them?

Max, I hope you understand I'm not trying to personally attack you, but obviously your editor isn't clear on what AP Style is when she checks your articles. Working at TEC is a chance to learn more about the journalism world (including AP Style). I know that I was taught many lessons during my time there and I quickly had to learn all of the rules, because many will not check over you. I suggest you carry that book around like it's your bible, go through every single inch of your articles and don't leave all changes up to your editor.

As a former editor at TEC with a COMM degree, I too am saddened by the lack of concern about JOURNALISM shown in the last few weeks at TEC. I wish ppl wouldn't post comments anonymously, however, just bc there isn't a name posted doesn't mean it isn't true. And if the last comment saying, "get over it" is from a TEC staffer, you should be ashamed, because every comment posted up here is true and should be taken into account. Why use an anonymous source instead of contacting Gville PD or walking down the street and getting a quote from an employee of The Other Place or Michaelangelo's? Unless you are getting a important inside scoop on condition of anonymity, using an anonymous source is pointless. The problem with the date is a HUGE issue. And why are current employees & very recent former employees being asked for quotes? Basic journalism, AP style, and structure are necessary and should be elements valued by TEC. When a former TEC employee directed me to a few recent articles on the site and reader comments, I was deeply saddened. This should NOT have made it past copy editors or the editor in chief. This is a huge story for TEC and should have been more thoroughly prepared. What does it have to do with recent celeb deaths? And the earlier poster is right-there is a problem with a lot of sentence structure and unnecessary info. I resent the fact that a paper many people put such effort into last year, now puts out this kind of material.

Maybe if the School of Comm had a better relationship (or any relationship) with TEC, the writing and reporting would be better. How many classes in the School of Comm focus on print journalism? Two or three maybe? FML.

I generally like the East Carolinian, but this article was very very poorly put together. I feel like i could get the same/better information the reflector (which is obvious that some of your info came from there and WITN).

And a few good points were brought up:

1. Why are you interviewing your own writers for stories?
2. Why are you guys on this anonymous source kick?

which leads to questions of my own:

1. Why is ahmet aksoy involved with stories that involve anonymous sources? if you ask me i think you guys are probably making up statements

2. Who approved posting an article that looked like this?

It deeply saddens me that TEC has come to this. This is simply one year of staff bashing another. This is constructive critism at its worst. This is not helping to make TEC better, just bashing the few writers and editors TEC has to work with. I'm afriad soon there will no longer be a paper due to the fact people are scared of the comments and thoughts of the ex staff members and peers. I know exactly who wrote the comments above and as a friend of the three of you, I am extremely sad that you guys would stoop to this level.

Too right Jane

For sure, we should not foist criticism upon those who richly deserve it. To do otherwise is to insist upon excellence, effort, and a care for detail, things that are obviously beyond the reach of mere college students, who manage to produce professional-looking papers all over the country, just not in Greenville.

And though I hate to quibble, it is important to note that noone from ECU has ever been a Journalism major. The primary reason for this is there is no Journalism degree at ECU. The main reason for that is there is no Journalism school at ECU. There is a concentration within the communications department, but this hardly serves to adequately prepare people who want to cover the public's business.

But yes, instead of honest criticism of completely sloppy and shite reporting, we should just pat them on the back and tell them what a good job they did failing. Well spotted.
