"Bag Out" for Basketball vs UTEP on 02/24
I formally request that all students join a protest by wearing bags on your heads with the following message written on them - STOKES MUST GO! Terry Holland is obviously senile to think that ECU fans will accept a coach that loses 20 straight division one games. He's still in staunch support of his former player. By making a protest on national TV we can make a statement to the Chancellor and the Board of Trustees that this program is at rock bottom and needs a massive change of leadership. We can make a difference. There is no reason students should have to endure a season like this one. Bring a bag and make a difference!" 1. No plastic bags are allowed. 2. No white bags 3. Front should read "STOKES MUST GO!" 4. Back should read "Stokes couldn't coach his way out of one of these". 5. Bring an extra bag for those in attendance who want to join the movement. Should come in handy in the 2nd half. 6. Conceal all bags upon entering Minges. 7. Bring camera and/or camera phone. 8. If ECU is losing by more than 10 points at the first timeout after the 4:00 mark in the first half, as the ball is inbounded, put bags on and chant "STOKES MUST GO" and continue until halftime. 9. If ECU is losing at the 4:00 mark in the second half, as the ball is inbounded, put bags on and chant "STOKES MUST GO" and continue until the end of the game. 10. Do not engage in verbal or other confrentations with other fans. This is a peaceful protest. Contact security if threatened. 11. Obey all requests made by law enforcement. If asked to leave the arena, use cameras at this time. Move orderly and deliberately to the exits. 12. Honor any interview requests by the media. Be cordial and fully express the dissatisfaction you have with the basketball program and coach. Tell them that the Pirate fans deserve better. 13. Remove bags before exiting Williams Arena and dispose them properly. |

Not sure I've ever seen a more inappropriate name for a message board poster. Terry Holland certainly has a
tough call coming up about the current men's basketball staff. That decision does not need to have the complication of appearing to be driven by some students/fans with bags on their heads, donors publicly threatening to cancel their contributions, season ticket buyers telling everyone in ear shot they will not renew, etc. That is simply not a way for ECU to begin conducting its business. Disappointment can best be expressed privately to the decision makers in a less emotional way. The only possible response to the "pressure" you think you can apply by making a childish demonstration of having bags on your heads that will humiliate coaches, players and their families is that Terry Holland and Chancellor Ballard would be forced to stand up for the larger issue of how this university will conduct its business in the future rather than being able to decide whether to give this staff another year objectively. The one thing I think you CAN count on is that Messrs. Ballard and Holland will not allow ECU to send a signal that it will respond to threats. So, the bottom line is this - you can "bag" the basketball program Saturday and force the decision makers to possibly make the wrong choice on the coaching situation because they have to protect the integrity of the university for the future which is far more important than who coaches basketball next season. Counterproductive if you are seeking a coaching change it seems to me. |
