Phi Beta Sigma

Monday night, The National Pan-Hellenic Council of East Carolina University awarded their sororities and fraternities at their annual Greek Life Banquet.

Phi Beta Sigma Fraternity brought in multiple awards that included Outstanding Academic Development Program of the Year, Outstanding Educational Programming, Chapter Advisor of the Year—Isaac Everette (ECU alumnus) and Chapter of the Year.

“The Chapter of the Year award not only says a lot of about our chapter but it speaks volumes for our Fraternity as a whole,” said Abu-Bakarr Kuyateh, senior bio-chemistry major and secretary of Phi Beta Sigma. “Phi Beta Sigma strives for excellence everywhere and East Carolina University is no exception.”

Just this past winter, Phi Beta Sigma held Sleep Out for the Homeless, an event to help bring awareness to homelessness in Greenville. This event brought out many ECU students with donations to help support homeless shelters throughout Greenville.

Lambda Theta Alpha Sorority also took home four awards that included Outstanding Educational Programming, Outstanding Philanthropy Program of the Year, Outstanding Academic Development Program of the Year and Chapter of the Year.

Lyanne Payamps, senior criminal justice major and Vice President of the Epsilon Theta Chapter, said that it is very rewarding to know their hard work has paid off.

“Through everything, we grow and we will continue to make our campus proud,” said Payamps. “Being apart of Lambda Theta Alpha Latin Sorority, Incorporated is truly amazing. Through unity, love, and respect, we will continue to uphold our foundation.”

Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority both received honors. With the Highest GPA Award going to Sigma Gamma Rho and Zeta Phi Beta Sorority receiving an Outstanding Collaborative Program award.

“It was my first awards show and I definitely loved meeting and greeting Greeks of different councils,” said Takeyah Vereen, junior psychology major and member of Sigma Gamma Rho. “Also, hearing all the positive accomplishments that they have made on our campus.”

Alpha Psi Alpha Fraternity also received an Outstanding Collaborative Program award with Phi Mu.

“It’s not about winning, it’s about impacting campus and transcending,” said Kris Montford-Brown, senior communication major and member of Alpha Psi Alpha. “I am extremely excited to be a part of a chapter that wants to do the best, be the best, and provide the best for not only Greenville, N.C., but anywhere we go.”

Each year, NPHC hosts the Greek Life Banquet, bringing recognition to the accomplishments of the Greek organizations of the Divine 9 and other councils as well on East Carolina’s campus. Members of the sororities and fraternities of the Divine 9 at East Carolina, along with other councils, said they continue to try and do big things in and out of Greenville. This past weekend, Kappa Alpha Psi won First Place in the Davidson Apocalypse Greek Step Show: Revelation of The Divine. Their chapter took home $1,000 and a 3-foot trophy.

Joshua Pyant, president of The National Pan-Hellenic Council, said the event was very successful.

"It is so great to see Greeks of all different organizations working hard to accomplish the same goals in educating the campus on various programs and getting involved in the community,” said Pyant. “Such recognition ceremonies as the Greek Life banquet serve as a catalyst to the ongoing success and hard work in the Greek Life community at ECU.”
