As students and faculty settle into their academic routines at East Carolina University, the administration has shaken up the university’s image by introducing a new logo to represent the university.
The new logo features a simple outline of the Cupola on main campus. Along with the new logo, ECU has changed its branding statement from “Tomorrow Starts Here” to “Capture Your Horizon”.
ECU Chancellor Cecil Staton said the new logo is symbolic of the university’s growth as an important and relevant university.
Staton said.
The logo will debut on ECU’s website on Sept. 10
“We thought it was unique, and traditional,” Staton said. “We felt it was a strong and professional image, a symbol of our university that can carry us forward as we go through this rebranding effort that we are going to be involved in all year long.”
Staton said while the new logo has already been implemented in small batches, the plan is to use the logo in various ways including marketing and signage.
“It will be a very intentional thing as we move into the year and you'll begin to see it more and more,” Staton said.
He said the administration considered changing the logo to go along with the changes they have felt ECU is currently undergoing.
“We are involved in the very early stages of lifting the brand of this university,” Staton said. “I am very frustrated that all the great things that we can easily brag about sometimes gets lost. People view us, in some respects, as that little university from 30 or 40 years ago and instead we have become a vital national university.”
Students who have seen the rebranding responded with mixed emotions. Some embraced the new look while others were disappointed in the change.
Makenzie Dixon, an ECU student majoring in junior and middle grades education, thought the new logo set a good tone for the university.
“I think the rebranding is a step in the right direction,” Dixon said. “We've had the same branding for a long time and it's a welcome change that will hopefully get ECU more nationwide recognition due to how professional it looks.”
Other students feel the new logo lacks luster, such as John Medina, a senior economics major at ECU.
“I think it needs more pizaaz,” Medina said. “I’m not a fan of how plain it is now.”
Staton said he is very proud of the new logo and those who were involved in the process. He added the project was an internal project which created benefits such as reduced costs as well as local ingenuity.
“We used our own people, we let our people come in and they brought a lot of different things to the table and we thought this was the best of what we had seen and we were drawn to it,” Staton said.
Staton said although there was a very involved process when making this decision, the choice to use the cupola came naturally.
“The cupola is a very favored and hallowed symbol of this campus and so our designers decided to use that,” Staton said. “They used it in the context of a shield which is very common throughout established universities across the country.”
As ECU continues to move in the direction of becoming America’s next national university, Staton said this is the perfect time to disprove those who say ECU isn’t relevant.
“Some of that is our own fault, we’ve got to toot our own horn so to speak,” Staton said. “We’ve got to tell our story better, so as we prepared to tell our story better it was a natural time to think about how to we brand this university?”
