As the dog days of summer sessions begin to wane, East Carolina University is preparing for its 2018 fall semester with several events to welcome students back to campus.
According to the ECU academic calendar, classes will reconvene for the fall semester on Aug. 20. Several different campus groups have organized events for returning students and incoming freshmen.
The 2nd annual 'Raid the Rec' 2018 will be taking place on Aug. 17 at the Student Recreation Center from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. According to the ECU Events calendar, 'Raid the Rec' plans to have an indoor roller rink, glow-in-the-dark putt putt golf, an inflatable obstacle course sponsored by the National Guard, a punching meter and a complete Bubble Sumo set up on the basketball course.
There will also be free food served from local Greenville restaurants and free giveaways such as T-shirts and foam hooks to several of the first participants who show up to the event, according to the ECU events page.
'Get a Clue', an annual event held by the University to encourage students to get involved with on and off-campus organizations, will be held on Aug. 22 from 11:00-3:00 p.m. on the university mall near the Cupola.
'Get a Clue' will have more than 200 student organizations and more than 100 local business to meet and collect information on along with several give-a-ways and free promotional items.
Besides these two campus events, other campus organizations have planned activities to welcome students back to ECU.
The ECU Adventure Leadership Program will hold a freshmen tubing event on Aug. 25 to provide new Pirates the opportunity to make friends while floating down the Cape Fear River. This event is restricted to members of the ECU Student Recreation and Wellness Center.
ECU Career Services will also be holding a launch party in the Mendenhall Student Center brickyard from Aug. 28 to Aug. 30 to celebrate its new job posting site, HANDSHAKE. Students can get free T-shirts and food as part of the party.
The first ECU home football game will take place on Sep. 1 at 6 p.m. versus North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University. Students can sign up to be apart of the Student Pirate Club, SPC, which offers tickets to get into the Boneyard student section.
According to the academic calender, the last day to add or drop classes is Aug. 24 by 5 p.m. Census day, the official enrollment count, will be taken on Aug. 30 at 5 p.m., according to the ECU academic calendar.
