In a mass email sent out to East Carolina University students on March 19, Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Virginia Hardy announced that many on-campus services that will have significantly reduced hours or will completely transition to online-only as another preventative measure to stop the spread of the coronavirus (COVID-19).

Hardy’s release details the changes for all main departments and buildings that hold services on ECU campus. She also stated that the changes are designed to also reduce the number of students on campus.

“While ECU remains open, there will be some significant changes. There will be minimal on-campus operations, which includes limiting the number of students on campus,” Hardy said in the email.

For Campus Recreation and Wellness Facilities, all locations will be closed until further notice. This includes the Student Recreation Center, North Recreation Complex, Blount Fields and Health Sciences Campus Recreation Center, according to Hardy’s email.

The release also details that all services through ECU Career Services will transition to online-only services, and appointments can be scheduled through Handshake. These appointments will be either online or over the phone and additional services are listed on the Career Services website.

Joyner Library will remain open, but with adjusted hours of operation. From March 18 to March 20 the library will open at 8 a.m. and close at 5 p.m. From March 21 to March 22 it will open at 1 p.m. and close at 5 p.m.

From March 23 until further notice, the library will only be available to ECU and UNC System students only, and all students must have a valid student ID to enter. On Sunday, it will open from 1 p.m. to 5 p.m. and from Monday to Thursday spanning from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. Students will only have access to computers, printers and self-serve scanners on the first floor.

The Center for Counseling and Student Development is also not providing face-to-face meetings at this time, but has several services for coping with uncertainty, fear and change as a result of COVID-19. Crisis services are phone only at 252-328-6661 from Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. For emergencies, the email urges students to call 911 or go to a local hospital

Starting on March 18, Todd Dining Hall will be open from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. from Monday to Friday and Pirate Market POD will open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. This schedule will span until March 24. Beginning on March 25 Todd will open at 8 a.m. and close at 2 p.m. and the POD will open at the same time as earlier, but close at 2 p.m.

The parking deck is open and free to all, and campus transportation services will run from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. every day.

The Dean of Students Office will be open during the week from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. as well as Disability Student Services for the same schedule.

Dowdy Student Stores is closed until further notice, but is providing students with free digital textbook access until May 25 through Vital Source.
