I’d like to welcome all East Carolina University Pirates and Greenville community members to the fall semester and thank you for your readership of The East Carolinian.

This is a very exciting time for The East Carolinian. I’d like to take a moment and explain to you, our readers, all the new exciting initiatives, partnerships and changes which will be coming to The East Carolinian this semester.

Our mission here at The East Carolinian is to provide a historical record of life at ECU through reporting on news, arts and sports. We work each day to train our staff members to be the best journalists so they can go out and report on the topics you care about. This mission starts from the very beginning at the candidate level and goes all the way up to editor-in-chief.

For those looking to become part of this mission, The East Carolinian is now accepting applicants for our fall candidate class. As an independent, student-driven organization, The East Carolinian depends on motivated students to join the newspaper and be the future of this publication.

I joined The East Carolinian in fall of 2015 as a candidate and progressed up through the organization. At each level I learned how to be journalist, covered some amazing stories and helped create some positive changes for my community. By joining the newspaper, you can accomplish these same feats.

Beyond our candidate program, there are some new initiatives and partnerships involving The East Carolinian which I am very excited to announce. Starting this fall The East Carolinian is going to work more with organizations such as ECU’s Student Government Association, Faculty Senate, Student Affairs division and ECU Police Department to give our readers more information and increase this publication’s visibility.

As editor-in-chief, I believe it’s equally important for us to report what’s happening at ECU and be a part of the community. Therefore, I’ve worked with many community members throughout the summer to create some fun, informative and important initiatives for our readers.

Along with the launch of some new initiatives, The East Carolinian is also very excited to be part of Student Media’s upcoming app. The app will allow community members to read The East Carolinian while on the go. As times change in journalism and our readers transition to digital platforms, it’s important for The East Carolinian to keep up. For that reason, among many others, I am very excited for the upcoming Student Media app. This new app will likely be launched during the fall semester.

On a smaller level though, readers of The East Carolinian may notice some changes to our publication online. Community members can now submit confidential tips to The East Carolinian through our website. I encourage anyone to submit a tip to The East Carolinian about a story idea, an issue which needs investigating or other pieces of information which you believe may be helpful.

While it may seem as though The East Carolinian is changing, I can assure you the core principles of this publication will remain the same. Truth, fairness and independence are all core values here at The East Carolinian.

As editor-in-chief of The East Carolinian I can assure you my staff and I work hard to produce content which is truthful, fair and independent of any bias. I hope you enjoy our work this year and continue to support this publication through your readership.

I’d like to thank you for your support and say that as editor-in-chief I am always available to listen to your concerns. Times may change, but the success of The East Carolinian is only growing.
