As the upcoming year is set to begin academically and athletically, the athletic department has announced Ian Van Cott will be the new assistant coach for the men’s tennis team according to Olivia Coiro, Assistant Director of Athletics Communications.
Before accepting the position at ECU, Ian Van Cott served as a volunteer assistant coach at Princeton for the 2016-17 season.
During his campaign, the Princeton Tigers finished the season with a 14-12 record, with two players Alex Day and Luke Gamble reaching the NCAA Doubles Championship. The two received a No. 59 national ranking as the top Ivy League team in the May 4 Intercollegiate Tennis Association rankings.
Cott got his foot into coaching experience by working at Sportime Schenectady in Schenectady, New York, where he organized a tennis camp for more than 50 kids ages 5-17.
At Sportime, Cott got the opportunity to train with some of the best young tennis players in the country, including the No. 6 fourth grade girl and the No. 5 10-and-under boy in the United Stated and the United States Tennis Association’s Eastern Section.
“We are fortunate to be able to hire Ian,” Heinchon said. “As we got to know him it became clear that he would be a great fit for ECU.There is no doubt we will benefit from his playing experience.”
Cott’s versatility also stems from playing for Tulane, where he was able to be a four-year letterwinner and posted an above average 52-46 career singles record for the school. He went 43-20 overall in doubles and 28-19 in dual matches. In his senior year, Cott took charge and helped guide Tulane to the NCAA Tournament where the team won its first NCAA match in over 11 years.
“Ian was a great college player at Tulane,” Heinchon said. “He helped the Green Wave become a perennial top-25 program.”
The tennis team last season at ECU, finished 16-9 and advanced to the quarterfinals where it ultimately fell to the University of South Florida 4-0.
The men’s tennis team struggled more on the road, where it finished 5-5. Cott’s playing experience and knowledge of the game can be used to help fix the mentality of the players so they could excel in the American Athletic Conference.
New recruits and new coaches coming in can ultimately fuel the Pirates to go farther in the conference tournament and perhaps help Pirate Nation bring home a conference championship.
