Diver Alicia Roueche earns AAC honor

East Carolina University’s Alicia Roueche earned American Athletic Conference Women’s Diver-of-the-Week honors after bringing in a first and third place finish in this past weekend’s final home meet of the season against South Carolina University.

“It’s awesome being named AAC Diver-of-the-Week because you never really know how the rest of the conference did during their meets that same weekend, so it’s always a surprise finding out,” Roueche said.

Roueche was the only female athlete of ECU’s team to win an event. With a score of 324.75, she earned first place on the 3-meter springboard as well as third place on the 1-meter springboard with a score of 282.60.

Roueche has earned one other Diver-of-the-Week honor earlier this season from her first place finishes in the 1-meter and 3-meter events against Old Dominion University with scores of 290.05 and 348.70 points respectively, making her a qualifier for the North Carolina Athletic Association Zone Regionals.

Although Rouche brought in many points for the women’s team, the Pirates couldn’t rack up enough points on the men’s or women’s team to secure the win for the final home meet of the season. The men’s team lost 176.5-115.5 and the women’s team fell short 181.5-110.5.

“We put forth a good effort today and had some very solid performances,” head coach Matthew Jabs said according to the press release. “I’m very proud of our seniors in the final home meet of their career.”

As the end of the season nears, the Pirates only have two more invitational meets: the UMBC Tri-meet and the South Carolina Collegiate Invitational. ECU will compete in these before preparing for the upcoming AAC Championships. The Pirates will face UMBC, Virginia Military Institute, Wingate University, the University of South Carolina, the University of North Carolina at Wilmington and Queens University of Charlotte.

These meets begin in Baltimore, Maryland for the UMBC Tri-Meet on Saturday, Jan. 20.
