Freshman forward/guard Brandon Suggs - 2019/2020

Freshman Brandon Suggs looks for an opening against Southern Methodist University on Wednesday night.

After suffering consecutive double digit losses in conference play, a three point-barrage would cause the East Carolina University (8-11, 2-4 AAC) men’s basketball team to lose for the third time in a row by double digits, when it took on Southern Methodist University (13-4, 4-2 AAC) Wednesday night with the final score being 84-64.

The game got away from East Carolina early. The Pirates were able to hit the first bucket of the game when freshman forward/guard Brandon Suggs sunk a three-pointer, but after that the team never led again. SMU got out to 15-5 run to start the game and controlled the momentum going forward.

ECU was unable to stop the barrage of three-pointers from the Mustangs throughout the game to where it allowed SMU to knock down 15 three-point baskets during the game. Seven of those deep shots came in the first half and eight more were added in the final 20 minutes. Unfortunately, the hot shooting was not contagious. For the game, the Pirates shot 43.3% from the field and struggled from the free throw line, hitting only 7-of-12.

Sophomore forward Jayden Gardner and Suggs both led the Pirates in scoring with 18 points. Suggs set a new career high in scoring, beating his previous record of 16 points. Freshman guard Tristen Newton also was in double figures with 15 points.

SMU was led by junior guard Tyson Jolly, who finished with 17 points and hit a total of five shots from three-point territory. Sophomore guard Kendric Davis dropped 15 points and set his team up with nine assists.

The Pirates will look to bounce back against Tulane University (10-8, 2-4 AAC) on Saturday in Minges Coliseum. Tip-off is scheduled for 6 p.m. inside Williams Arena.
