ECU Softball travels to Honolulu for a two-day tournament.

The East Carolina University softball team’s losing streak is now at eight games after going 0-2 in the first day of the Malihini Kipa Aloha Tournament in Hawaii, with losses against Longwood University and the University of Hawai’i.

In its first game of the tournament, ECU gave up four first inning runs to Longwood and could never come back, losing 4-1. The Pirates lone run came from a fourth inning home run by senior infielder Meredith Burroughs, but ECU could not get any offense after that.

On the mound for the Pirates, freshman pitcher Whitney Sanford struggled and earned the loss. Sanford, now 3-6 on the season, gave up all four runs before junior pitcher Mary Williams came on to pitch the final three scoreless innings.

The Pirates’ leader at the plate was Burroughs,

1-for-3 with a home run.

In the second game, ECU lost 5-3 to host team Hawai’i. ECU struck first behind another Burroughs solo home run in the second inning before Hawai’i immediately responded with three runs in the bottom half of the inning. ECU tied the game behind runs in the third and fourth innings each, with a single from redshirt sophomore infielder Tate McClellan to score freshman infielder Ashleigh Inae, and a solo home run from freshman catcher Anna Eppling, the first of her collegiate career. Hawai’i again responded with two more runs in the bottom of the fourth, giving it the 5-3 lead that it would take the rest of the way for the win.

Pitching was similar for the Pirates in this game, as freshman pitcher Erin Poepping gave up all five runs in four innings, before Williams came in relief and threw two scoreless innings. Poepping is now 3-4 on the season after getting the loss.

The Pirate’s leader at the plate in the second game was Burroughs again, who mimicked her 1-for-3 game with another homer.

After head coach Courtney Oliver had talked about the team needing more timely hitting, the Pirates were 1-for-17 with runners on base in both games combined.

ECU played again today, losing 6-4 against No. 15 University of California and 9-0 to James Madison University to go to 0-4 in the tournament and extending its losing streak to 10 games.
