After an 11 day break, the East Carolina University men’s tennis team fell short to William & Mary, 1-4 on Sunday afternoon.

ECU (11-4) was defeated by William and Mary (3-11) prior to Sunday making this the Pirates’ second straight loss overall. ECU struggled but fought hard against the Tribe as senior Ronny Georgi was the only Pirate to win a match, although that was not enough for ECU to come out on top this weekend.

Senior Vlad Anghel was defeated in two sets by William & Mary’s sophomore Sebastian Quiros 6-3, 6-1, while sophomore Wisse Jonker also fell short in just two sets against junior Brenden Volk 6-1, 6-2.

The Pirates began to fight back after they started out with a two point deficit, with Georgi earning a victory in two sets against freshman Oren Vasser 6-1, 6-4.

Junior Javier Renones lost his first singles match of the season against sophomore Finbar Talcott 6-2, 6-7 (5-7). Renones had recently picked up his 10th straight singles victory at the beginning of the month against the University of North Florida, but that was broken this weekend against W&M.

There were two unfinished singles matches where senior Will Bissett led the first set against the Tribe’s freshman Jack Kelly with 7-6 (7-3) and lost the second 3-4 before the match was left incomplete. The second unfinished match was with freshman Simon Labbe who lost his first set against W&M’s sophomore Chen Ruo 6-2, but came all the way back to tie the second match 6-6 before it was left not completed.

ECU fell short in both of its double matches played. The first doubles match was played by ECU’s duo of Georgi and Labbe who were defeated by Vasser and senior Tristan Bautil, 6-1. Anghel and Bissett put up a good fight in the second doubles match played against W&M’s Talcott and Quiros where they lost 6-4.

There was one other doubles match that was left unfinished with ECU’s Jonker and Renones, playing against Ruo and Volk where the match was left incomplete after a 5-5 tie.

“William & Mary always seems to have good doubles and today was no exception,” head coach Shawn Heinchon said in the press release. “They beat the crap out of us in doubles and we never really got back on track. We were a poor version of ourselves in singles and they did a good job of staying in control of the match. This was a good poke in the chest for us and was probably the worst we have played all year. But that happens, it’s no time to start feeling sorry for ourselves. We will get right back to work tomorrow to get ready for UNC Greensboro.”

The Pirates have a short three day break before their next game in Greensboro, North Carolina where they will go head-to-head against University of North Carolina at Greensboro on Wednesday. The match will begin at 2 p.m.
