World Wrestling Entertainment (WWE) is coming to Greenville this Sunday in Williams Arena inside Minges Coliseum at 1 p.m.
ECU’s Associate Athletic Director Scott Lane has had a relationship with the WWE for a while now to get some of its events to come to Greenville. WWE has a tight traveling schedule, therefore Lane tries to get them to come about every two years.
"We've sold about 1,200 tickets, but as the show gets closer I expect 2,000,” Lane said. “The match card is always pretty good when they come here.”
Lane is also in charge of ticket sales, which are being sold from $15-25, and East Carolina University student tickets are $10. As far as the match card goes, WWE Champion A.J. Styles will take on Jinder Mahal in a steel cage match for the main event.
Other matches include U.S. Champion Baron Corbin vs. Bobby Roode in a U.S. Championship Match, Shinsuke Nakamura vs. Kevin Owens and Tag Team Champions The Usos vs. Shelton Benjamin & Chad Gable vs. The Bludgeon Brothers in the SmackDown Tag Team Championship Match. Women’s champion Charlotte Flair, Becky Lynch and Naomi vs. Natalya, Tamina, Carmella and Lana in the Women’s 3 on 4 Handicap Match.
WWE star Sami Zayn will not be participating in a match on Sunday, but he will be accompanying Owens in the steel cage match. He has been wrestling for five years now and says he has always had a passion for Wrestling. Staying fit is an important part of the job and sometimes hard to do while traveling.
"It can be a struggle to maintain a good diet on the road, you know we travel from place to place,” Zayn said. “Some towns are two hours away and the next town might be five hours away and we either drive or take a charter flight."
Zayn loves the action of the job and getting reactions from the fans and putting on a great match is what he loves to do. One of Zayn’s favorite fighters to watch includes Randy Orton who will be competing at this event.
"Orton is great to go against because the fans love him and I get to beat him up and be apart of that and have a great match to show fans," Zayn said.
As the WWE superstars anticipate the show, so are the ECU students. Some students have been anticipating the show for months now and some even got their tickets as a gift, such as junior A.J. Sawyer, who got his tickets for Christmas.
“I’m excited to see the same people that are on TV break chairs on each other’s faces and backs,” Sawyer said.
The crazy environment with energized fans is only one of the many event being held in Minges this year. Lane has the Harlem Globetrotters set to come to ECU on March 21 for the next big event aside from basketball.
