After losing to Saint Francis earlier in the year during the Pirate Clash in a low-scoring game, the East Carolina softball team failed to get its revenge, as it lost both matchups over the weekend.

The Pirates (15-13) played three games in the Jeannine McHaney Memorial Classic in Lubbock, Texas over the weekend, coming away with a win over Texas Tech and two losses to Saint Francis.

In the first matchup, ECU was unable to get on base at all, as Saint Francis pitcher Ethel Santai tossed a perfect game in a five-inning mercy rule, 11-0. The second matchup was not much better for the Pirates’ offense as they scored just one run on a bases loaded walk by senior outfielder Ali Ramirez.

Redshirt junior catcher Alex Mycek was the only Pirate to record a hit against Saint Francis in either game. Saint Francis brought its winning streak to 13 after its two wins over Texas Tech as well as its two wins over ECU to sweep the weekend tournament.

The Pirates turned their weekend around with an 8-7 win over Texas Tech on Saturday, as junior Meredith Burroughs earned the win on the mound to bring her to 2-0 on the season. She also supplied a good amount of the offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored, three RBI and a home run.

Burroughs’ home run was her ninth of the season, giving her the second most home runs on the team behind Mycek. Mycek also hit a home run in the game to bring her home run total to 10 in the season.

The firepower coming from both of these players was unseen last year, as the leader for home runs was Ciara Ervin with just seven. To go along with the power of Mycek and Burroughs, redshirt freshman Tate McClellan has added five home runs of her own, allowing the Pirates to give serious threats to opponents to knock the ball out of the park.

Pitching for the Pirates this weekend was sophomore Mary Williams, to go along with Burroughs. Williams (3-7) took the loss in the first matchup against Saint Francis, giving up six runs on seven hits with three walks and two strikeouts in just two innings pitched.

Burroughs (2-1) earned the victory over Texas Tech, but was not as successful in the second matchup against Saint Francis, giving up two runs on four hits in just 0.2 innings pitched.

The Pirates will look to put these games behind them as they play in their last two non-conference games this week against Campbell Tuesday and Elon Wednesday, both at home.
