The East Carolina University (3-9, 0-0 AAC) women’s basketball team could not find a win in the West Palm Beach Classic against Northwestern University (10-1, 0-0 Big Ten) or Dayton University (6-7, 0-0 Atlantic 10) this past weekend.

On Saturday, the Pirates matched up against Dayton inside of Palm Beach Atlantic’s Rubin Arena, losing by a score of 94-68.

The Pirates were led in points by freshman guard Taniyah Thompson who despite the loss, was able to finish with a career-high 29 points. Thompson also tacked on a career-high six three-pointers and another personal record of eight rebounds. Redshirt junior guard Dominique Claytor and junior guard Lashonda Monk also made their mark on the game with 12 points each. Monk also had six rebounds and six assists to add.

Dayton on the other hand, had five players who scored in double-digits. Redshirt junior guard Araion Bradshaw led the Flyers in points with 18 while sophomore forward Jordan Wilmoth and redshirt junior guard Erin Whalen each had 17. Sophomore forward Kyla Whitehead had 16 of her own and sophomore guard Jenna Giacon tacked on 10 more for Dayton. The Flyers shot 93.9% at the line, making 31-of-33 free throw attempts.

ECU could not match Dayton anywhere on the stat sheet except in forced turnovers where the Pirates had 19 and the Flyers had 13. The Pirates finished 26-of-73 (.356) from the floor, 7-of-18 (.389) from three-point range and went 9-of-14 in free throws for 64.3%. However, Dayton dominated, making 28-of-52 shots (.538) while shooting 41.2% from three. Dayton also controlled in rebounds pulling down 38 to the Pirate’s 26.

On Friday, the Pirates took on Northwestern at Keiser University, dropping their first of two consecutive games over the weekend by a final score of 64-45.

Thompson led in scoring once again for ECU with 15 points. Junior guard Necole Hope had nine points and sophomore forward Tiara Chambers added with a career-high six points and eight rebounds. Monk had the most assists for the team with three and had four steals.

Northwestern had three players that finished with points in the double-digits. Junior guard Lindsey Pulliam led the Wildcats with 13 points, while sophomore forward Abbie Wolf and junior guard Jordan Hamilton finished with 12 each. Sophomore guard Sydney Wood and sophomore guard Veronica Burton added with each having four assists and Hamilton had five steals as well.

The Wildcats finished above the Pirates in all aspects except for at the free throw line where the Pirates shot 8-of-12 (.667) while the Wildcats shot 7-of-18 (.389). Northwestern also shot 25-of-52 (.481) and went 7-of-20 (.350) from three-point range. The Pirates finished 17-of-53 (.321) from the field and shot 3-of-12 (.250) beyond the arch. ECU took the advantage in forced turnovers having 20 to Northwestern’s 15.

The Pirates will travel to Athens, Georgia on Sunday to take on the University of Georgia (8-4, 0-0 SEC). Tip-off is scheduled for 2 p.m.
