UConn celebrates at Madison Square Garden

UConn officially committed to return to its former conference, the Big East, during a press conference in Madison Square Garden.

The University of Connecticut will officially move from the American Athletic Conference to the Big East Athletic Conference. There is no official date on when the move will take place, but the move will happen.

During a press conference with executives from UConn and the Big East, UConn president Susan Herbst signed official documents to make the move official.

“The Big East always represented the highest order of athletic excellence, so in joining the Big East now and rejoining, UConn is coming home,” Herbst said during the press conference.

The press conference was in Madison Square Garden in New York and was televised on the both the Big East and UConn official Twitter accounts.

After the press conference, the AAC made an official statement regarding UConn’s plans to depart from the conference.

“The University of Connecticut has announced its withdrawal from the American Athletic Conference. We wish UConn well,” AAC commissioner Mike Aresco said in an official statement on Twitter.

There is no evidence that the AAC will look to add another school to the 11 schools that will be remaining in the conference.

The official year that UConn will be joining the conference will be announced by the Big East at a later date.
