East Carolina University Sports Properties/PlayFly has officially finalized a deal with longtime broadcaster Jim Szoke to return as play-by-play announcer for ECU Football games this fall.
With more than thirty years of experience in sports television and radio, Szoke finished his first season with the Pirates, handling all play-by-play programming and co-hosting ECU's one-hour Inside Pirate Athletics special prior to the spring game.
He is now in his 30th season with the Carolina Panthers Network, where he has covered nearly every game in franchise history as a color commentator, pregame and postgame host, and has previously handled preseason play-by-play responsibilities.
“I am extremely honored to return to ECU Sports Properties for another year,” Szoke said in a press release. “Greenville is a special place with a loyal fan base, and I look forward to bringing all the action to Pirate Nation. There is such a rich history with the Pirate football program and I can’t wait to share all the stories from a coach, student-athlete and fan perspective.”
Szoke, a 2022 WBT (a Charlotte radio station) Hall of Fame inductee, also serves as the morning host for WBT Radio in Charlotte, where he has been the sports director for 30 years.
Szoke also provides play-by-play for certain Winthrop University basketball games on ESPN+. Other previous play-by-play work includes Touchdown Radio Network, Raycom Sports, Charlotte Hornets, Charlotte Knights, the University of North Carolina at Charlotte and Davidson College.
Szoke's second season will begin on Aug. 31 when ECU hosts Norfolk State University at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium.
