East Carolina University’s Wright Auditorium was illuminated by the flashlights of phones last night as the student attendees of this year’s homecoming concert welcomed headliner Lil Baby to the stage for his performance.
The evening began with high energy, as lines of students wrapped around the auditorium prior to the doors opening at 6 p.m. Most attendees came dressed to impress to see the up-and-coming rapper, including sophomore intended nursing major Tierra Grant, who was one of the first 50 students in line.
“I skipped my 3 p.m. philosophy class to see Lil Baby, because I needed to get a good seat,” Grant said. “I’ve been planning the outfit I was wearing for months. Everything I have on was bought specifically for this one night.”
Destiny Hill, a sophomore elementary education major, said she doesn’t know a lot of Lil Baby’s music. After listening to one of Lil Baby’s albums upon receiving the news he would be the homecoming artist, Hill said she believes the homecoming headliner’s music is “on the come up.”
“I thought the concert was good,” Hill said. “I think it (the concert) was a good turn-out.”
From the moment students walked through the doors of Wright, there was music from ECU’s official campus disc jockey, DJ BornFinesser, blasting through the speakers to get everyone hyped up and in the concert spirit.
From throwback hits such as Crime Mob’s “Knuck If You Buck” and Waka Flocka Flame’s “O Let’s Do It” to new school hip-hop anthems such as Tee Grizzley's “First Day Out” and Sheck Wes’ “Mo Bamba,” the music had many in the crowd dancing and singing along to the lyrics of each song before Lil Baby came out to perform.
The auditorium was packed with eager fans of the headliner who stood and chanted Lil Baby’s name throughout BornFinesser’s set. However, the rapper’s two-hour late arrival started to cause commotion in the crowd around 8 p.m., as upset fans of his began to question where he was both audibly at the venue and on social media via Twitter.
Alyssa Graham, a sophomore engineering major, said while the wait was overwhelming, she wasn’t leaving the concert until she saw the headliner perform.
“I thought the concert started at 7, but it’s just a DJ,” Graham said. “I was just ready for him (Lil Baby) to come out already.”
Despite the heightened commotion from the audience, BornFinneser and his hype man, DJ HighDemand, were able to come to the rescue throughout the night by keeping the crowd entertained with music and reassuring the waiting audience that Lil Baby was still coming. Although their positivity did stop many from leaving, they were still were upset.
Mahdi Sesay, a freshman public health major, said the energy in the concert was fun and that he liked it. While everyone around him seemed happy, according to Sesay, he said his expectations for the concert were lowered while awaiting the rapper’s arrival.
“Well, I was expecting to come in (to Wright) and see the performer there, but he’s still not here yet,” Sesay said.
After the long wait, Lil Baby finally took stage around 9 p.m. and according to some attendees, his performance made the wait worth it. He took stage to his verse fan favorite “Yes Indeed” with Canadian rapper Drake. There was a point in the song where he stopped rapping and let the crowd rap instead, and they didn’t disappoint, they knew every word to his part.
The rapper also performed his hit single “My Dawg,” which had the crowd jumping as everyone sang along and danced with their arms draped over their friends. Lil Baby also performed songs from his previous mixtapes, such as “All of a Sudden” and “Freestyle,” which had members of the crowd quoting him lyric by lyric from attendees on the floor of Wright to the ones standing on the auditorium’s upper balcony.
All together, the concert was a little more than 30 minutes, with Lil Baby performing a total of six songs. Taylor Meyer, a former member of ECU’s Student Activities Board, said she did not attend the concert, but had “no regrets” about her decision after finding out about the rapper’s performance from others who attended.
“I didn’t attend the concert solely because I had no idea Lil Baby was,” Meyer said. “So, after finding out that his performance was disappointing, I feel better that my time wasn’t wasted.”
Anthony Martin, a senior computer science major, said he didn’t mind the rapper’s tardiness, but added his only wish for the concert was for Lil Baby to have performed more songs from Drip Harder, the collaborative mixtape with Lil Baby and rapper Gunna released on Oct. 5.
“Drip Harder might have been one of the best releases of the year,” Martin said. “It’s a shame more songs from that record wasn’t performed at Wright last night.”
Despite the critique of the concert from student fans of the artist, other attendees such as ECU sophomore Torie Edwards said the price of the concert “softened the blow.”
Edwards, a self proclaimed fan of Lil Baby, added students shouldn’t be too angry about the concert if it was “overall a memorable experience.”
“Sure, he was late and he performed like six songs, but at least it was free of cost,” Edwards said. “Maybe SAB can look at getting openers for future concerts, but for now, what can we do?”
