In response to the spread of COVID-19, otherwise known as the coronavirus, East Carolina University Vice Chancellor for Student Affairs Virginia Hardy has announced on Tuesday that effective March 25 ECU will close its residence halls to students for the remainder of the spring semester.

Hardy said in her statement that the move out process will begin March 19 at 8 a.m. and conclude on March 25 at 3 p.m. as response from the campus and its worries about the safety of its students and their families.

“We have felt this as a campus, and we have heard stories of students and their families who have had to upend their lives as ways to protect their own personal safety and health. We are here to support you, and please know that our administrators, faculty and staff stand with you during these challenging times,” Hardy said in her statement.

The decision to close residence halls to students was made in accordance with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention as well as the University of North Carolina System, according to the statement.

Although the decision will soon go into effect, Hardy said in her statement that the university will review students with “special circumstances” who may still need to reside in their residence hall after the closure.

“Per guidelines in accordance with the CDC and the University of North Carolina System, effective March 25, 2020, ECU will be closing its residence halls to students for the remainder of the semester,” Hardy said in her statement.

Students who are unable to return to campus before March 25 at 3 p.m. will have their dorms secured by ECU Campus Living for the remainder of the semester, according to the statement.

Additionally, Hardy said in her statement that a second move out process will be scheduled after May 1 for those who aren’t able to return to campus between March 19 and March 25. More information about the move out process will be sent to students on March 18, 2020 at 10 a.m. through their student email.
