The East Carolina swim team took on the Old Dominion Monarchs Saturday and won in impressive fashion taking 29 of the 33 total events.
The women’s team won 15 of its 16 events, outscoring the Monarchs, 171-117. It started off strong by winning its first six events before losing in the 100-yard breaststroke. Junior Julie Lajoie had an impressive outing by winning the 1,000-yard freestyle, the 200-yard butterfly and the 200-yard individual medley event while junior Logan Graumann won the 100-yard backstroke and the 50-yard freestyle. Junior Alicia Roueche and senior Ashley Sams led the way for the Pirates in the diving events as Sams won the one meter and Roueche won the three meter.
The men’s team won 14 of its 16 events, outscoring the Monarchs, 175-113. The Pirates won their first eight events before losing in the 50-yard freestyle by .04 seconds. Junior Boleck De Pawlikowski won the 100-yard and 200-yard backstroke events, while fellow junior John Myhre took first place in the 100-yard and 200-yard freestyle events. Myhre also helped the Pirates come in first in the 200-yard medley relay and the 400-yard freestyle relay. Junior Matt Mullen won both the one meter and three meter diving events with junior Taylor Berkey finishing in second.
Those individual performers who were able to win multiple events were also a part of a balanced performance overall.
“This was a rivalry meet where we were stronger than our opponents. Coming off of a eight day training trip in Florida, we were tired but we stepped up and had great swims so I was real pleased with the team,” head coach Rick Kobe said.
Next weekend against the University of Maryland Baltimore County will be the last home meet of the season and Kobe’s last home meet of his career. Kobe is due to retire at the end of the season after 37 years with ECU.
“We have a real tough opponent in UMBC coming in, we will have to be strong going in to win,” Kobe said.
With the NCAA championships and American Athletic Conference championships coming up in the near future, Kobe said his team needs to continue to build momentum.
“If we swim and bring our A-game we will have a good shot. Everyone will have to be ready to go,” said Kobe.
