Former East Carolina University baseball player Jack Reinheimer made his Major League Baseball debut Tuesday night for the Arizona Diamondbacks in its 16 to 4 loss to the Chicago Cubs.
Reinheimer was sent in to pinch-hit for pitcher Patrick Corbin in the top of the fourth inning to face off against Jon Lester of the Chicago Cubs. Lester recorded his ninth strikeout of the night and 2,000th of his career, taking down Reinheimer.
With his MLB debut, Reinheimer became the 21st Pirate to debut since 2013 and the first debut as a hitter since Chad Tracy, who coincidentally also debuted with the Diamondbacks in April of 2004.
Reinheimer is the seventh former player to appear this season. His fellow Pirates this year include Baltimore’s Mike Wright, Kansas City’s Seth Maness, Oakland’s Jharel Cotton, Minnesota’s Chris Heston, Cleveland’s Shawn Armstrong, and Colorado’s Jeff Hoffman. This year, before being called up, Reinheimer was batting a .283 with 70 runs, including 4 home runs and 44 runs batted in.
The Seattle Mariners drafted Reinheimer in the fifth round as the 147 overall pick in the 2013 First-Year Player Draft. After being drafted in 2013, he was then traded to the Diamondbacks as part of the Mark Trumbo trade in June of 2015. He had completed 233 games with the Diamindback’s Triple-A club, the Reno Aces, before being called up for his MLB debut.
In those 233 games, Reinheimer is the fourth-most record holder of hits for the Aces and racked up 874 at-bats. His Minor League batting average is .278 through four seasons, in which he has 592 hits, accumulating 94 doubles, 18 triples and 16 home runs. Reinheimer has 222 RBI and three Mid-Season All-Star selections in the Northwest League in 2013 and the Midwest League in both 2014 and 2016.
