The East Carolina University soccer team remain winless in 2019 after being shut out by the University of Virginia by a score of 4-0. Ranked No. 6 in the country, the Cavaliers proved to be too much for the Pirates who fall to 0-1-1 on the year.
Early in the contest, it looked like the Pirates would hang with Virginia as the match remained scoreless through the first 20 minutes of action. Nevertheless, Virginia dominated in just about every statistical category, taking a total of 24 shots (nine on goal) to ECU’s three (one on goal) over the course of the match.
“Tons of credit to Virginia, they are a top notch team and that was no surprise to us,” head coach Jason Hamilton said. “We had a group of ladies that played very well tonight, but it has to be everyone and not just a portion of them. That was a great experience for us this early in the season and gives us a lot to work on moving forward.”

The scoring for Virginia was opened by senior forward Meghan McCool in the 21st minute and was followed by back-to-back goals from freshman forward Diana Ordonez in the 47th and 78th minutes, respectively. Those scores were assisted by junior midfielder Taryn Torres and senior forward Alissa Gorzak, giving the Cavaliers a commanding 3-0 lead in the closing minutes of the match.
ECU did stave off multiple Virginia attempts to extend their lead as they notched five saves in the contest, one coming in the first half and four in the closing half. Conversely, the Cavaliers had just one save, a testament to their stout defensive ability.
The final tally of the game came on a Cavalier goal by redshirt junior midfielder Anna Sumpter in the 80th minute, capping the scoring at 4-0 in favor of the home team.
“We’ve spent a lot of time this week talking about growing as individuals and growing as a team,” Hamilton said. “Understanding the level we are at is a really important thing that we have to do. It’s no us all as a program, the coaches to find better ways to teach, and the players to process the information and improve. The good news is it is early and we have a lot of soccer left, so we will regroup and get ready for the next one.”
That next match will take place on the road in Radford, Virginia against Radford University today at 2 p.m.
