East Carolina University Men’s golf team traveled to Kannapolis, North Carolina last weekend to compete in the Irish Creek Intercollegiate tournament where the Pirates finished seventh.

“Early in the round we were tied for the lead after getting off to a good start,” head coach Andrew Sapp said in the press release. “Being in the final wave of top teams for the last round was definitely an experience this young team needed and hopefully the next time we are in that situation we will capitalize on it more. We just couldn’t make the birdies down the stretch on the back nine after getting off to a really good start.”

The Pirates finished 5-over-par (289) in Sunday’s final round. After starting in third place that morning this positioned them just two shots outside of the top-five at the Club at Irish Creek. University of North Carolina at Greensboro won the team tournament title with a 54-hole score of 18 under par (834). Ohio State University finished in second only 8 strokes behind UNCG. The rest of the top five consisted of Kansas State University (-9), Florida State University (-4) and Davidson College (-3).

The Pirates’ best individual scorer of the tournament was junior Blake Taylor. Taylor shot 2-under par (211) which tied him for 14th place. Teammate junior Patrick Stephenson finished one stroke behind Taylor tying him for 20th place. Junior Tim Bunten finished the tournament 2-over par (215). Meanwhile sophomore Stephen Carroll carded a 3-over par (216), freshman A.J. Beechler scored a 4-over par (217) and redshirt freshman Jimbo Stanley finished with a 13-over par score of 230.

The golf team will travel to Cary, North Carolina for the Stitch Intercollegiate tournament at MacGregor Downs Country Club on Friday and Saturday looking to build momentum going into the American Athletic Conference Championship scheduled for April 21-23.
